Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Friday reiterated Islamabad’s support for a political solution to the Afghan war, Radio Pakistan reported.

In a meeting with the United States Special Envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Qureshi said peace and stability in Afghanistan were vital for Pakistan’s own long-term stability and progress.

The foreign minister welcomed US’s emphasis on “effecting a political statement in Afghanistan” and added that Pakistan always believed there was no military solution to the conflict.

The US envoy thanked Qureshi for his support and said he looks forward to working with Pakistan for peace and stability in in the war-torn country.

FM Qureshi is representing Pakistan at the annual UNGA session. Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua, Ambassador to the US Ali Jahangir Siddiqui are part of the delegation.

The foreign minister has met his counterparts from Qatar, Japan, China, UK and other world leaders during his New York trip.
